HISTORY
A BRIEF HISTORY OF FOOTBALL IN RHOS

Association football was first played In Rhos. on Saturday, February 3, 1877 when the newly formed Llanerchrugog Hall lost 1-0 to the Civil Service side from Wrexham which included many Welsh internationals. However, the 14 defeats did not dishearten the villagers since football has been played-almost continuously ever since by a variety of sides which have included: Rhosllannerchrugog, Rhos Olympic, Rhos, Levers, Rhos, Rhos Comrades, Rhos. Eagle Wanderers, Rhos Early Closes, Rhos Rangers, Rhos. United, Rhos Church, Rhos Albino, Rhos Victoria, Rhos. Athletic, Rhos Chums, Ponciau Welfare, Llannerch Colts and most recently Rhos. Aelwyd.
When the first Welsh League was set up in 1890, Its success was due mainly to a Mr. Cotterill of Bronwylfa, Rhos. The Welsh League's original members were: Rhos, Bangor, Druids, Mold, Rhostyllen Victoria, Rhyl, Ruabon and Westminster Rovers of Wrexham. During that last decade of the Nineteenth Century, Rhos were regularly represented in the English FA Cup and along with Chirk were the only two Welsh clubs to feature in England's inaugural Amateur Cup competition in 1894.Rhos's first national honour came in 1898 when the miners of the Rhos Eagle Wanderers defeated Shrewsbury tobacconists Singleton and Coles, by 6-1 In the Final of the Welsh Amateur Cup at Chirk a record winning margin that remains to this day. After unsuccessfully dabbling with the professional game in the early 1900s Rhos's next major cup victory was again in the Welsh Amateur Cup of 1912 when Rhosllannerchrugog beat Summerhill 2-1 in a Final replay at the Racecourse, Wrexham.
In 1921-22 in the first season of the new Welsh League (Northern Division), Rhos secured the Cup and League Double, but this successful professional side was short lived as the depression of the mid 1920s took Its grip on the mining communities of the North Wales Coal field. The next senior side to represent the village was the highly talented Llannerch Celts of the 1930s. As well as winning numerous League and Cup competitions the Celts provided a number of Internationals for the Welsh Amateur side and Is still remembered with great affection by the elders of the village.

And now to Rhos Aelwyd.
The club was formed in January 1943 at Capel Mawr in Rhos. Originally run as a youth side, Rhos Aelwyd have been playing continuously for over 50 years and celebrated a very successful Golden Jubilee crowned with a Grand Concert which featured a Rhos Aelwyd F.C. Choir made up of football club members old and not so old.
The club has had numerous successes over Its fifty years, the first being the capture of Urdd Gobaith Cymru's Pantyfedwen Cup in 1955 in their sixth successive Final.
After amalgamating with local Ponciau Aelwyd, Rhos Aelwyd in 1958/59 under the leadership of Meirion Powell completed the Cup and League double in the Welsh National League's Second Division. The club's finest victory came in North Wales Prestigious Barritt Cup in 1986.
The Aelwyd, managed by Peter Davies won all their ties away from home. In a nail biting Final at Llanelian Road, Colwyn Bay, Rhos Aelwyd defeated a strong Caernarfon Town in a sudden death shoot out.
A magnificent celebratory night out on the town was enjoyed by all.
In 1992, due to the vision and enthusiasm of manager Andrew Williams and a strong committee, Rhos applied and were accepted as members of the North Wales Cymru Alliance.
Unfortunately, the club was relegated from the Cymru Alliance in 1997 and returned to the Welsh National League premier Division.
As part off its ongoing development the club established a Youth section in 1988 which continues to thrive to this day.  Indeed many of the players in the senior squad are products of the youth sections which we are very proud of, the Youth section currently runs 4 teams from under 11's through to under 15's level.
During the season 2005/06, under the leadership of Tony Williams, the Aelwyd had one of the most successful seasons in its long history, winning the Welsh National Premier Division Championship and also reaching the finals of both the Premier Division Cup and the North East Wales Football Association (N.E.W.F.A) Challenge Cup.
The present committee comprises of a good mix of members who have been associated with the club for over three decades and enthusiastic youngsters who are actively involved with the current Youth section.  The effective and efficient administration of the club in the past and present, is evident from the clubs development and achievement, both on and off the field of play.
The Aelwyd remains an ambitious club and aims to return to the Cymru Alliance.  To this end the club will in the near future carry out the ground improvements necessary to meet the strict Cymru Alliance league ground criteria.
The club decided and actually launched its official club Website on 18th July 2006 and is committed to bringing thorough up-to-date information to interested parties globally 24hr a day 365 days a year.
At the begining the season 2007/2008 the club replaced long serving manager Tony Williams who decided to have a break from local football with ex profesional footballer Steve Waters assisted by Gary Harris and managed to guide the club in his first season to one of its finest hours when capturing the prestigious F.A.W. Welsh Trophy in April of 2008 at Cefn Druids FC's Plaskynaston Ground.
